ELEMENTS:

SPACE:

· The space feels grand, intimate, and airy

· Position of windows create a welcoming feeling

· The windows make the space come alive

· The straight lines made by the boards in the ceiling and multiple windows that almost reach to the ceiling increase the height of the space

· The straight lines made by the boards in the ceiling emphasize the room boundary

· The use of white in the walls and ceiling create coolness in the room

· There is plenty of room around the dining table for movement

· Positive: dining table, chairs, rug, table decoration, two chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, plant pots

· Eyes focus on positive space

LINE:

· The lines in this space create a sense of direction and define the space

· Vertical: window frames give sense of height, makes the space taller, narrower

· The vertical lines in the windows direct the eye downward and to the center of the room

· Horizontal: window frames, ceiling, give sense of stability and widen the space

· The horizontal lines in the ceiling give the room a contemporary look

· Diagonal: ceiling

· The diagonal lines in the ceiling direct the eyes up, create stability in the design, and add volume and drama to the room

· Curved: chandeliers hanging from the ceilings, plant pots on the table – both give a human quality to the space and are easy on the eyes

· Curved lines add gracefulness and soften up the room

SHAPE:

· The architectural structure of the window filled walls and the ceiling are visually pleasing

· Curvy shape in chairs help soften the room

· Different shapes give the room its function

· Curvilinear – chandelier, plant pots

· Geometric – circle, squares, triangles (almost complete triangles), rectangles, lots of windows

· Windows have rectangles and squares that are a point of interest

· Organic – plants, center decoration on table – differ from the rest of the room creating visual interest

COLOUR:

· The tan/tan brown really stands out against the crisp white details and really opens up the space

· The use of white really brightens this room up

· Dominant colour: White

· Secondary colour: tan/tan brown

· Accent colour: green

TEXTURE:

· The texture on the rug directs the weight to the floor and off the heavy table

· The texture created by the many windows gives the room an informal, inviting feel

· The crisp white, smooth ceiling with its lines and the white walls contrast with the texture and the tan/tan brown of the table and chandeliers, rug, and finish on the floor

· Sensory Texture – walls and windows, chandeliers, plant pots and décor on table, dining table, rug, hard wood floor

· The furniture gives a feeling of heaviness and the bright white contrasts it with a feeling of lightness

· Rough look to flooring, table, rug - all create a rustic look

LIGHT:

· Natural light – lots of large windows that allow a substantial amount of natural light through them and into the room

· Natural light is optimized in this space

· Natural light coming in creates a room that is beautiful and bright

· Natural light softens the room up

· Artificial light – two chandeliers hanging from the ceiling

PATTERN:

· Pattern adds interest to this room

· Physical texture – repetition of lines on ceiling, repetition of shape of windows, ten chairs all the same, twin chandeliers, twin plant pots, repetition of colours on the rug

· Structural pattern is found in the architectural detail

PRINCIPLES:

BALANCE:

· Radial – table, chairs, chandeliers are all distributed from a central point, design extends from the center, creating a social space (for gathering, eating) where the focus is on the middle of the room

· Objects are arranged to create balance and harmony

· Symmetrical – if you cut the table in half, you would have a complete mirror image with the chairs, plant pots, table, chandelier, and windows

· Room has a feeling of formality, precision and equilibrium

· Room is large, bright, and has simple geometric shapes

RHYTHM:

· Eyes dance downwards from chandeliers to dining table and then to windows

· Repetition – repetition of elements is found in the windows, horizontal lines on ceiling, chairs, twin chandeliers, twin plant pots; patterns through predictability

EMPHASIS:

· The positioning and height of the chandeliers creates a focus point

· The designer has used nice, light colours in the room to emphasis the ceiling detail

· Ceiling – lots horizontal lines, shape of ceiling, and structure - stand out and emphasize the height of the room and draw your eyes upward

· Lots of large, unobstructed windows with a beautiful view of the outdoors leave a lasting impression and direct your eyes up

PROPORTION AND SCALE:

· The size of the dining room is large and the proportion of the furniture (especially the large dining table) suits the scale of the room

· The positioning of the furniture allows for space around the table for serving

· The room features a tall ceiling and the diagonal lines in the ceiling emphasize it

· The distribution of items creates a very balanced room

· The room tries to follow the 60/30/10 COLOUR RULE: 60% white; 30% Tan/tan brown, and 10% green

HARMONY:

· This room has commonalities in shape, colour, texture, lines, and materials

· Shape - square and rectangle windows complement square rug and rectangle table; round shape in chandelier complement round shape in chairs, plant pots, and one large window

· Colour - tan/tan brown used in chandeliers, rug, chairs, floor, table, decorative piece - all complement one another; accent colour found in plants

· Texture - texture found in chandelier, table, and floor

· Lines – lines used in ceiling detail, wall with windows and hard wood floor

· Materials – timber used in hard wood floor and dining table

· This coastal and chic room successfully achieves harmony
