THE ACHROMATIC CONTEMPORARY FRENCH PROVINCIAL HOME:
The rooms I created include an inspiring study, a secure and cozy living room, a functional WC, and an intimate guest bedroom. The best way to define this space is to call it, Contemporary French Provincial. It is Contemporary because it draws from various styles and focuses on the function of each room. It also draws from the exchange of cultures including the Middle East, Asia, and South Asia. The space is a modern day east meets west. You will find influences from those cultures in my sample boards. For example: Mesopotamian times were famous for their embroidery and rugs; Ancient Egyptians were famous for their flowers for decorative purposes; Ancient Greeks were known for their mosaic tiles; and the Moors were known for geometric shapes and patterns. Furthermore, it has high quality furniture, meaningful artwork, a sense of luxury, wallpapers, and the use of silk and velvet. It is French Provincial because I find the furniture of this era to be very attractive. The furniture is sturdy with a beautiful, simple elegance. It copies ornate furniture styles of the past. French Provincial style began with furniture makers in the South of France copying the furniture being produced in Paris during the 17th and 18th centuries. Rural furniture makers created their own more affordable pieces. An example of French Provincial furniture in my design is the curio cabinet used in the study for storage.

The body is made of cast aluminum with inlaid mother of pearl. It’s synthetic head has 6 tuning bolts. It’s a beautiful, artistic piece. The A Z Bookends keep books in order and are made with a cement finish. I chose to add the book Roots by Alex Haley to this design because I read this book when I was 16 years old and it is a great conversation starter. This novel tells the story of Kunta Kinte, who is sold into slavery in the United States. When Roots was first published forty years ago, it received a Pulitzer Prize and was a #1 New York Times bestseller for 22 weeks. It also became a mini-series that was watched by over 130 million Americans. Today at a time when the race conversation has never been more charged, Roots is a stirring reminder of history. I chose this book, A Promised Land by Barack Obama because it’s another great conversation starter. This book won awards as well, such as: #1 New York Times Bestseller and an NAACP image award finale. Barack Obama tells the story of his life from a young man searching for his identity to becoming leader of the free world and the first African American to hold the nation’s highest office. It is a personal account of history from his eyes. I just finished reading this book and I chose to have it in this space.
DESCRIPTION:
The study is a small room with furniture, storage units, and accessories. This room has lots of storage space including a wooden curio with cabinets and shelves to store files, books, linens, or clothes. This piece is a modern take on the traditional French Armoire found throughout history. For additional storage, there is a wall mounted decorative wood storage cabinet that has shelves that are concealed with sliding barn doors. It is a floating cabinet directly above the desk that can be used for books and files. The desk has additional drawers for more storage. There is a utensil holder that can store pens and some stationary and files. This room has plenty of storage space, so there is no need for an additional book shelf, bookcase, or file cabinet. As you enter the study, you notice a special paint finish that caters to the use of the space, it is a chalkboard painted finish covering the entire north wall. There is also an acoustic feature wall on the east wall, made up of sound absorbing panels, to reduce noise and sound transmission and to create a quiet and comfortable room. The study has fairly busy walls. One wall is a chalkboard and the other wall is for acoustic purposes, so I have decided not to put up any wall art, picture frames, or prints. Instead, I have decided to add full size instruments (a sitar and tabla) to act as decorative and task features. The client is a music and arts enthusiast so the instruments are used to decorate the room as well as to be played. The sitar is a South Asian instrument that is often played with a tabla. Both are used in this room. I thought a lot about the use of this space and how to keep it safe. Thus there are no candles, it seems like it would be a dangerous room to put candles in especially if they are left unattended. I love an exposed bare floor, so I did not want to add a rug in this room, however there are rugs in other rooms. I don’t normally like lamps that are not permanently fixed to a wall or ceiling, but I know that this is a task space, so I have included a desk lamp. Although a wastebasket might be helpful, I don’t like wastebaskets because they alter the formality of the room. But there are wastebaskets in the kitchen and WC. Blinds are used here as an efficient way to let in light or block it out. The Tidwell cotton throw is reminiscent of the style of design found in Indonesian Textile or even Aztec Textile and is used for those colder days while studying. A clock is beneficial in a study. I wanted the clock to be whimsical and fun so I opted for an animation-like elephant clock. The desk is an executive size so it is large enough to be comfortable to work at with a laptop and multiple notebooks on it. There are two chairs. The vanity stool is used as a desk chair and sits in front of the desk. The armchair is custom made. The ottoman that sits with it is also custom made. The geometric plaid on the 100% wool ottoman ties in nicely with the imitation leather in the armchair. They look really good together. The White French Memo Board will be placed on the same wall as the desk and the wall mounted storage cabinet, but off to the right side, allowing for easy access when needed. The memo board is used to display paperwork, notes, reminders, time tables, calendars, bills, lists, etc. Because this room is a study room, I have not proposed a mirror, but there is one in the guest bedroom.
ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN:
The space feels full, warm, and cozy. It is being used to do homework, study, for quiet time, to read a book, and to practice playing instruments. The positive space has furniture, pieces of art, and accessories. The negative space provides balance and harmony. There are horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and curved lines in this space. The horizontal lines are found in the curio cabinet, armchair, blinds, ottoman, track light, storage cabinet, laptop, desk organizer, desk, desk chair, throw pillow, throw blanket, sitar, tabla, bookends, and books. The horizontal lines bring the eye level down and create a sense of stability. There are vertical lines are in the curio cabinet, armchair, blinds, ottoman, storage cabinet, laptop, desk organizer, desk, desk chair, throw pillow, sitar, tabla, bookends, and books. There are diagonal lines in the acoustic feature wall, track light, storage cabinet, memo board, desk organizer, throw blanket, and desk lamp. The diagonal lines add volume and drama to the space. There are curved lines in the armchair, ottoman, track lighting, desk, desk chair, horse statue, wall clock, throw pillow, desk lamp, plant, sitar, and tabla. The curved lines add gracefulness to the space. The shapes in this space are curvilinear, rectilinear, geometric, organic, and abstract. The curvilinear shapes are in the armchair, ottoman, track lighting, desk, desk chair, horse statue, wall clock, sitar, and tabla. The rectilinear shapes are in the curio cabinet, blinds, storage cabinet, memo board, laptop, desk organizer, desk, and throw pillow. There are geometric shapes in the acoustic feature wall, curio cabinet, blinds, storage cabinet, memo board, desk, and books. There are organic shapes in the plant. There are abstract shapes in the horse statue, wall clock, throw pillow, throw blanket, desk lamp, sitar, and tabla. The colours used in this space are white, greys, and black. Light to medium shades brighten up this room. The visual texture creates a space that is rich, comfortable, sophisticated, and relaxing. The sensory texture is in the acoustic feature wall, curio cabinet, storage cabinet, memo board, desk, horse statue, wall clock, throw pillow, plant, sitar, tabla, and bookends. The acoustic texture is in the acoustic feature wall. There is natural light from the window and there is artificial light from the track lighting and the desk lamp. The curio cabinet has a mirror back panel that also reflects light. The lighting helps create a practical space to study. The visual patterns can be seen in the blinds, ottoman, storage cabinet, memo board, throw pillow, throw blanket, and tabla. Physical patterns with physical texture can be found in the acoustic feature wall, blinds, storage cabinet, memo board, sitar, and tabla. The patterns add interest and create contrast. There is asymmetrical balance in the space. There is a desk, desk chair, storage cabinet and memo board on one side of the room and an armchair, ottoman, and curio cabinet on the other side. This asymmetrical balance is informal and relaxed and creates casual movement in the room. There is repetition of pattern in the acoustic feature wall; repetition of rectangles in the curio cabinet, repetition of squares in the ottoman; repetition of diagonals in the memo board; repetition of rectangles in the desk; repetition of pattern in the throw blanket; repetition of tuners on the sitar; and repetition of pattern on the tabla. Repetition in the hexagonal shape of the acoustic feature wall tiles creates a playful rhythm that draws your eye throughout the wall. The built-in focus in the room is the acoustic feature wall. It is something different that really attracts the eye and leaves an impression. There is created focus on the sitar and tabla because these instruments are unique and different. There is also focus on the large executive desk, it really is a statement piece. There is balance and harmony in the distribution of items in the space. There is also harmony in the common colours used, similar shapes, and varying textures. Textures and patterns can be found throughout, creating a space that is rich, relaxed, and sophisticated. This room is both cozy and functional.

DESCRIPTION:
The living room is an attractive and welcoming place to chat with friends, watch television, read a book, and listen to music. This space has also been arranged in a way to allow for easy conversation. The living room is also part of the open space concept. The west wall behind the sofa holds the clock, the south wall holds the window, and the east wall holds the television. Therefore there is not a wall to place artwork, paintings, or photo frames on. The room has both a sofa and loveseat. I did not add an armchair or ottoman because the space would become too crowded with furniture. I am not a fan of floor or table lamps but that’s ok because the space already has a window, four recessed ceiling lights, two ceiling lights, and light reflected from the television. The living room has a large size window which opens up the space, allows air movement, more natural light, as well as a view. I have used durable blackout curtains with a soft platinum colour, to provide privacy and allow light into the living room. The curtains make the room feel warm, cozy, and romantic. The blackout feature will not only provide privacy in the home, but will allow the client to have the option of watching late night movies in the dark. Using blackout curtains means there is no need for an extra sheer window treatment beneath. The fabric is deliberately simple in pattern and colour, taking a back seat to the other patterns already in the room and tying them all together. The curtains will be hung from an eyelet curtain header using a pole, creating a simple, casual and modern feel. Passementerie is also in this space in the form of platinum double tiebacks. The custom throw cushions are made of 100% taffeta silk decorated with viscose embroidery which is reminscent of ancient chinese silk with embroidery. It has a bold floral print that is so beautiful and exquisite. These silk cushions will provide aesthetically pleasing decorative feature to the living room space and elegance in the home. The cushions will be set on the sofa and loveseat along with the pre-existing cushions. The small scale pattern blends nicely with the repeating floral patterns in the wallpaper in the living room and on the stairs. There is a good amount of storage in the media fireplace. For additional storage, I have added the 62” Wide Sideboard behind the loveseat. It is reminiscent of Chinese Credenzas. The 7’ x 10’ shag area rug is a plain and simple area rug that plays a back seat to the other textures and patterns in the room. I like really unique plants. That’s why I chose the five foot olive topiary for this space. The focal point of the space is the east wall with the television and fireplace. The east wall has black watercolour floral wallpaper with both a chair rail and a picture rail. Between both rails is the television. The picture rail is meant to help frame the top of the hanging television (instead of supporting artwork). The dado rail (or chair rail) has been added to help frame the bottom of the hanging television. The fireplace is for relaxation, the television for entertainment. There are no coasters here, but coasters are in the dining room. There are no books here but books are in the study.
ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN:
The space feels airy, cozy, happy, and bright. The space is being used to relax, watch television, read a good book, or to have conversation with guests. The positive space makes the room come alive with its furniture, artwork, and accessories. The negative space allows for space to walk around the room. The lines used in this space create a sense of movement and are a combination of vertical, horizontal, and curved lines. The smooth lines create a sense of serenity. The vertical lines make the room look formal and give the room strength. The horizontal lines create a more contemporary feeling and direct the viewpoint to the television. The curved lines give the room a human quality. The furniture is voluminous. There are curvilinear shapes in the coffee table, candles, rickshaw statue, curtain rod, clock, vases, plant potter, love seat and sofa. There are rectilinear shapes in the rug, end tables, curtain drape, television, fireplace, ceiling light, throw pillow, and sideboard. There are geometric shapes in the ceiling light and sideboard. There are organic shapes in the plant. There are abstract shapes in the statue, tiebacks, vases, sideboard, loveseat and sofa. The shapes create a feeling of comfort as well as function. The colours used are white, greys, and black and the use of light to medium shades brightens up the room and makes it cozy and inviting. This room has a lot of texture and pattern in its sofa, love seat, vases, candles, cushions, wall paper, clock, and sideboard, creating a space that is rich, sophisticated, and comfortable. Visual texture can be seen in the throw blanket, curtains, television, and throw pillow. Sensory texture can be found in the rug, candles, statue, curtain rod, tiebacks, fireplace, ceiling light, clock, vases, plant, sideboard, loveseat and sofa. The multiple textures in the sofa and love seat evoke a desire to touch. The texture of the wallpaper pulls the weight of the room toward it. The pillows and upholstery that make up the love seat and sofa also add acoustic texture because they absorb sound. The textures used in this space make it a rich and formal space but with shiny and soft seating. Natural light comes from the window and artificial light comes from the ceiling lights, brightening up the space. The patterns in the wallpaper, candles, clock, throw pillow, vases, sideboard, and in the love seat and sofa, all add interest. Balance is achieved to create stability and harmony. Heavy items are balanced with light ones. Also, heavy furniture is presented in light colours. Items are distributed in the space. There is asymmetrical balance in the placement of the furniture around the coffee table, the weights of the objects, and how they are arranged. There is a sort of radial balance with the coffee table being the centre point. There is repetition in the designs in the candles, shapes in the ceiling light, pattern in the throw pillows, vases, design in the sideboard, and in the pillows all over the loveseat and sofa. There is alternation in the way the pillows are displayed on the love seat and sofa. There is progression in the way the candles and the vases are displayed. Although the sofa and loveseat are absolutely beautiful, the emphasis is mostly on the east wall where there is decorative wallpaper, a picture rail, a dado rail, a fireplace and a television. That wall definitely attracts the eye with all its elements, creating a lasting impression as a design feature. Harmony is achieved using common shapes (round corners, curves), colours (achromatic), and various textures. The shapes in this room emphasize the room’s comfort and function. Lots of curved lines add gracefulness to the room. Soft furniture and soft pillows also create softness. The designs and textures on the fabrics give it a warm, welcoming feeling. The room looks like a great social space to get together.

DESCRIPTION:
The WC is a small space but everything in the room is easily accessible. I want guests to see the beautiful manmade Enigma Artisano Fiore Porcelain tiles that have a painted stencil pattern and a slip resistant finish; so, I did not want to add a bath mat or rug to cover it up. The toilet brush is not the most attractive item, so I tried to choose one that is rectangular shaped and could fade in the background behind the toilet. The fragrance bulb allows you to keep the WC smelling fresh and is used instead of candles. The room has a good amount of storage solutions in the drawers that are part of the vanity and some counter space to place things on, but no shelves. The drawers can store towels, beauty products, and cleaners. The cabinet handles are already part of the vanity. The bathroom vanity also includes the sink. Classic style roman blinds made of 100% linen that fold as you draw it upwards, are the perfect choice for this space. They let in and out the light while not getting too close to the wet sink area. They provide privacy in the home and insulate the room from heat, cold, and noise. Inspired by the bays of the Amalfi coast, this bold pattern is highly decorative and has on it a delightful and sophisticated damask print treated in an Ikat style. The blinds look beautiful with the black wainscoting and black paint. The blinds bring softness as it works with the splashback design. Splashbacks protect the wall surface from heat, water, and staining. The WC uses a glass, stone, metal mosaic tiles with smooth sheen to line the walls behind the vanity. Since this is a WC, not a bathroom, it doesn’t need a tumbler set, instead it does have a tissue box and soap dispenser. I added a world map as art work. I did not want any statues in the WC. Instead I added a bonsai tree.
ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN:
The use of space feels elegant and well thought out. It serves its use as a WC. The objects in the space relate to each other creating an airy, even spaced place. The positive space is taken up by the objects that make the room come alive using fixed fixtures, art work, fittings, and accessories. The negative space allows for movement and function. The lines in this space create a serene environment while the patterns in the space are bold. The vertical lines make the room taller, while the horizontal lines balance it out. The curved lines are pleasing to the eye and soften the room. With its lines, the space becomes full of life and drama. Curvilinear shapes can be found in the floors, artwork, blinds, toilet, wastebasket, hand towel holder, design on towel, plant, tap ware, scent bulb and soap dispenser. Rectilinear shapes can be found in the mirror, tiles, vanity, blinds, toilet brush, towel holder, towels, wall sconce, and tissue box. Geometric shapes can be found in mirror, splash back, vanity, blinds, toilet brush, and wall sconce. Organic shapes can be found in the plant. Abstract shapes can be found in floors, wall art, blinds pattern, wastebasket, print on towels, tap ware, wall sconce, and pattern on the tissue holder and soap dispenser. All these shapes create a visually pleasing space. The colours used are whites, greys, and black. The use of white creates a bright, welcoming, open space. There are visual textures all over this space, creating a lot of interest. There are sensory textures in the mirror, splash back, tap ware, wastebasket, towels, hook, sconces, tissue box, soap dispenser, and plant. All this texture helps create an interesting space with shiny, glossy, and matte textures. Natural light is from the window and artificial light is from the wall sconces and from the mirror. The vanity also has an LED feature. The light creates a practical, bright, and safe space. The placement of objects within this space is for practical purposes. The floor is unique giving a sense of spontaneity. The sconces on either side of the mirror are placed symmetrically. There is repetition in the patterns in the floor tiles, blinds, towels, tissue box, soap dispenser, and splash back tiles, creating a sense of rhythm. There is a progression of objects in the towels, each one increasing in size. The main focal point is the tile floor that really stands out. It attracts one’s attention and adds drama. There is a created focus with the wall art. Balance and harmony is achieved by having patterns that are similar, colours that are similar, and shapes and textures that are similar.

Pictek Digital Alarm Clock LED Curved Screen has a large borderless curved screen with clear LED digit display so it’s easy to read time. DESCRIPTION:
There are plenty of storage solutions for clothes, books, etc. The built in wardrobe provides space to store lots of dresses, suits, shirts, and shoes. It is painted the same colour as the rest of the room’s walls, making it almost hidden yet elegant at the same time. There are side end table nightstands that also have drawers. Additionally, the Atkinson 6-Drawer Double Dresser allows for plenty of storage space for clothes and has a mirror to help guests get ready. The Vintage Moroccan Berber Storage Basket is a decorative piece that can be used for additional storage and is reminiscent of baskets found in Morocco. The guest bedroom has a custom made double size upholstered bed. The fabric is plush, soft, and made from velvet, bringing a level of elegance and formality to the space. Made from a combination of viscose, cotton, and polyester, this geometric pattern is soft stripes. These stripes go well with the wainscoting stripes in the WC; the stripes in the wood panels in the laundry; and with the stripes in the study. Its headboard is placed against the wall. The bed is dressed using Baucom Patchwork 8 Piece Double Comforter Set. The bedding set includes comforter, coverlet, 4 matching pillow shams, and two decorative pillows. I added a really chunky knit throw blanket that is perfect for curling up in and staying warm. The guest bedroom has two wall sconces and a recessed LED panel light. There is a table lamp which is also rare in this home, as lighting fixtures are preferred over mobile lighting pieces. Its lampshade is custom made from 100% cotton. The name of this pattern is maisie, a more abstract motif. It is a repetitive geometric pattern based on potato printing. I have added a Pictek Digital Alarm Clock LED to add more light and to keep track of the time. The Indochine 10’ x 10’ Round Grey Area Rug is a great rug for the space and creates a nice circular shape in a space full of rectangles. The Custom Curtain with Matching One-piece Swag hung from eyelet curtain header and pole is a pretty curtain that adds warmth and comfort to the room. Passementerie is also in this space in the form of Platinum Double Tiebacks. This is one of the few rooms with wall art. The pieces I choose are beautiful pieces that have a lot of meaning; the print is called Holding Hands. It is two people of different races, holding hands. The decorative 3D Wall Panel on the west wall of the guest bedroom is made of natural plant fibre, is 100% recycled, and is compostable. Since there is no official gaming space in the home, I have added the portable game console, Nintendo Switch, allowing guests to have personal time to play video games. It can also be connected to a television when needed. There are no wastebasket and no dressing table in this space.
ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN:
The guest bedroom is used to house guests. It will provide a sleep space while being opulent and beautiful. The space feels warm and a significant amount of the room is being used. The objects relate to one another by creating a secure, cozy and intimate feeling. The positive space makes the room come alive using furniture, artwork, and accessories. The negative space keeps things in relative proportion and harmony. There are a lot of horizontal and vertical lines in this space. The vertical lines draw the eyes upwards creating dignity in height. The horizontal lines bring the eye level down and widens the space creating stability. The curved lines are easy on the eyes and give a pleasing, human quality to the space, for example, the curved shape of the rug, lampshade, and potted urn communicate a feeling of softness. The shapes are curvilinear and rectilinear and provide comfort and function. There are geometric shapes in the wall sconce and headboard; organic shapes in the olive tree and flower vase; and a variation of abstract shapes in the Moroccan basket, throw blanket, table lamp, and the decorative candle sticks and bowl, creating several points of interest. The colours used are white, greys, and black. The colours are a mix of light and medium shades, brightening up the room while adding to the mood of relaxation and balance. The white furnishings stand out beautifully against the grey walls and floors. The visual texture is found the floor, table lamp, the drapes, the giraffe statue, the wall artwork, and in the bed linens. Sensory texture is found in the headboard, bed linens, rug, light fixtures, basket, decorative pieces, olive tree and throw blanket. The use of textures and patterns create a room that is relaxed, comfortable, and rich. There is also acoustic texture in the 3D Decorative Textured Wall Panel Tiles. This textured wall finish absorbs sound. Because the 3D panel is heavily detailed, the white velvet in the upholstered bed and its stripes, helps soften up the space. The light used in this room is romantic. There is natural light in the window and artificial light from the alarm clock, table lamp and two wall sconces, providing safety and security as well. There is symmetry in the way the nightstands are placed on either side of the bed. There is symmetry in the way the bed linens are arranged on the bed. The two wall sconces are placed symmetrically on either side of the bed. And there is symmetry in the placement of the wall artwork on the wall. There is repetition in the way the pillows are placed on the bed. The built-in focus is the built-in wardrobe. The created focus is on the statement piece artwork and the Moroccan basket. All three create interest and leave an impression. Even though different textures are used in the room, room does not feel heavy. It feels evenly spaced. Balance is achieved using pattern and arrangement. There is a good amount of furniture in the room. With the bed in the center, there is plenty of space to walk around the bed. Textured elements balance with smooth elements. The different patterns add interest in the room. Harmony is achieved between common elements of colours (achromatic); shapes (lots of rectangular shapes and sharp corners); textures (both visual and tactile); and lines (horizontal and vertical). The room is the perfect place to rest and looks warm, and inviting.
