Space Planning

FLOOR PLAN

for web sized smaller more.jpg

This new space is modern. I created a large open plan encouraging an ease in movement, by combining the kitchen, dining room, and living room. The kitchen is used for cooking, the dining room for eating, and the living room for conversations. On the opposite end, the space is divided into smaller rooms according to function: the games room, the study/guest bedroom; and the WC(water closet)/laundry room. The client loves to cook and wants an open concept kitchen as well as a space for family. I have tried to create that space.

The WC/laundry room are combined to create one large room. The WC consists of a standard toilet and small vanity basin. The laundry room has a soaker sink, as well as a combined washing machine (bottom) and clothes dryer (top). The cupboard and shelves can store towels, laundry, and cleaners. This compact room, just big enough to use, can be used by two people at the same time because two cavity sliding doors have been installed to divide the rooms. In a family’s busy morning routine, this feature can become essential.

The study/guest bedroom is used for homework and to house guests. It has a double wardrobe and a twin sized bed. Other typical bedroom essentials are not needed as this room is not used regularly. The study is a corner of this room, consisting of one desk (and computer) and one office chair. There is also a shelf above the desk for storage.

The games room is a small and secluded space that allows guests to have personal time, play video games, watch television, or listen to music.

L-shaped seating in the living room creates a conversational room with the television stand (and television) as its focal point. The L-shape sofa acts as a room divider and the small coffee table adds to the conversation. The living room is used out to watch television, chat with family, or to relax.

The dining room is a square table that is centred with 4 chairs, accommodating the usual number of family members (up to 4). The small table size increases intimacy at the table and the family can chat about their planned events for the day at breakfast or dinner.

The kitchen is a corner with island – triangle in shape - with no obstructions or traffic flowing through the work triangle. The cooker is an oven and hub combined; the sink is a single bowl on the island; and the refrigerator is away from the oven. The island joins the dining room to the kitchen, which allows: social interaction with the cook; social flow between the kitchen and entertaining areas; and the ability to see everyone at once.

Storage is plenty: double wardrobe in the study/guest bedroom; cupboards/shelves in the WC/laundry room; pantry near the kitchen; kitchen cabinets for storing kitchen items; and a bench and shelves in the entrance.

Single swing doors are found in the main entrance, pantry, and the study/guest bedroom. Cavity sliding doors are found in the games room, WC, and laundry room. A double swing door is in the dining room, allowing the outside in. A bypass sliding door (also lets the outside in), is next to the WC/laundry room.

The kitchen and living room have larger sized windows which open up the space, allow air movement, more natural light, as well as a view. The kitchen has a splash back window. There is also a window in the study/guest bedroom.
