Interior Finishes
THE ACHROMATIC HOME:

Wall Finishes: Paint is used on the walls. Wallpaper is used as a feature wall in the living room, on the stairs, and in the pantry.

Cladding: The WC has black paint as well as black wainscoting on all 4 walls. The laundry has white paint on all 4 walls, as well as black wall panel (Wood) on all 4 walls to contrast. 3D wall panel on the guest bedroom west wall is made of environmentally sustainable material. Both a chair rail and a picture rail are used on the east wall of the living room. A mirror is used on the WC south wall. There is a specialty paint finish of chalk board paint in the study on the north wall. The study also has an acoustic feature wall on its east wall.

Flooring Materials: Hard flooring materials are used in the space. The manmade porcelain tiles that are used in the WC, laundry, and pantry have a painted stencil pattern and a slip resistant finish. Dark grey wood laminate flooring is used throughout the rest of the space. No soft flooring surfaces were used in this particular home design.

Ceiling: The ceiling has been designed using faux pressed metal ceiling tiles in white. Although I did find many silver coloured options, I did not want to use silver as it clashed with the other interior finishes. So I opted for white. This ceiling is used throughout the home to give a formal look to the space.

Decorative Details: Architraves conceal gaps around the outer edges of the door and window structures. Skirting boards are used to protect the walls from damage. Architraves and skirting boards are same in colour and similar in profile shape. Although cornices are usually painted the same colour as the ceiling, I wanted to paint the cornices Dulux Black Magic 1001-7 to match the architraves and skirting boards. The Picture rail located in the living room on the east wall is meant to help frame the proposed hanging television (instead of supporting artwork). The Dado rail (or chair rail) has been added to help frame the bottom of the proposed hanging television on the same wall. A ceiling rose is used as a decorative feature in the dining room.

Windows and Glass: In the kitchen on the north wall, there is a proposed frameless window that will act as a window splashback with cupboards above and bench top below. The window will bring the outdoors inside.

Door Hardware: Throughout the home, the door hardware is matte black. Door knobs are used for hinged interior doors. Flush pull sliding door handles (not shown) are used for interior sliding doors. The front entry door hardware is also matte black, making a statement and introducing visitors to the decorative style of the home.

Kitchen, Laundry, and WC Bench tops: I love granite, but taking the client’s budget into consideration, I chose laminate instead. The kitchen bench top is laminate with the look of granite in white, greys, and black. The laundry room bench top is also laminate and very close in colour to the kitchen’s bench top, but less black in its colour. The surfaces in both kitchen and laundry room are high-wearing, non porous, stain resistant, and very easy to clean. The finish in the kitchen is called Artisan – reminiscent of the hand rubbed oiled texture used to produce fine wood surfaces. The finish in the laundry room is called Etchings – a softly polished and etched surface dappled with highlights from tiny fractures and fissures reminiscent to those found in natural granite and stone. The WC bench top is part of the bathroom vanity which also includes the sink.

Kitchen, Laundry, and WC Splashbacks: Splashbacks protect the wall surface from heat, water, and staining. In the kitchen, the splashback is made of ceramic tiles with glazed finish and they line the walls above the bench top and behind the cook top. The tiles make the small kitchen feel bigger. The laundry room uses a polished tile, natural stone splashback behind the sink and continues along the length of the bench top. The WC uses a glass, stone, metal mosaic tile with smooth sheen to line the walls behind the vanity.

Kitchen, Laundry, and WC Cabinets and Handles: The cabinets in the kitchen and laundry room are made of MDF and are laminate finish. In the kitchen, the lower cabinets are grey; the upper cabinets are white; and the island cabinets are white. In the laundry room, the cabinets are grey. In the WC, there are no cabinets because the bathroom vanity has two drawers included in its design. Cabinetry handles are practical and decorative. In the kitchen and laundry rooms, cabinet door handles are square knobs and cabinet drawer handles are cabinet pulls. Both are in matte black. In the WC, cabinet handles are already part of the vanity.

Lighting: Lighting fixtures throughout the space have been chosen to complement one another. Crystal lighting fixtures are used in the WC (wall sconce), Front Entrance (wall sconce), Dining Room (ceiling fan); and Guest Bedroom (wall sconce). In the WC, the lighting chosen adds some softness to the hardness of the mirror. Brushed Nickel bar spot fixtures are used in the laundry room, back entrance, pantry, and front entrance. Satin Nickel recessed ceiling lights are used in the kitchen and living room. Black fixtures are used in the kitchen, living room, and study. And multicolour LED strip lighting is used in the kitchen and on the stairs. The same exhaust/fan/heat/light are used in both the WC and laundry room.

Acoustics: In the study on the east wall, an acoustic feature made up of sound absorbing panels has been used to reduce noise and sound transmission and to create a quiet, comfortable, and attractive room.

Environmentally Sustainable Design: the 3D Wall Panel on the west wall of the guest bedroom is made of natural plant fibre, is 100% recycled, and is compostable.

In conclusion:

Using an achromatic colour scheme, I have created a cohesive design. Similar materials are used throughout to create this cohesive design. For example, the ceiling colour is used throughout; the door trim colour is used throughout; and flooring materials are kept to only two options. The use of similar shapes in the flooring of the WC, laundry, and pantry with shapes in the splashback of the kitchen, create a subtle connection between spaces. Similar shapes in door hardware, tap ware, and cabinet handles also create a connection between spaces.

A mixture of textures, patterns, and styles are used to create this intentional eclectic style.
