DID YOU KNOW
There was a time in Canada's history when there was a limited-edition $25 bill issued by the Bank of Canada.Issued for only a short period in 1935, to honour of the silver jubilee of King George V, Canada’s reigning monarch at the time. The note featured a portrait of the King alongside his wife, Queen Mary.
Today, there are approximately 1,840 of these bills in circulation. The government plans to remove its legal-tender status, along with that of the similarly-discontinued $1, $2, $500 and $1,000 bills.
That $25 is now equivalent to $466.32 in today’s dollars, according to the Bank of Canada’s inflation calculator. So, what could you have bought with that money in 1935? A lot, it turns out.
Here is a list of products and services that you could by with $25 in 1935:
1. five nights at a resort in the Rockies
2. a licence to hunt big game in Manitoba
3. a 45-piece household linens set, complete with bedding, towels and napkins
4. a full tailored suit for men
5. a topcoat for women.
If you have one of these banknotes lying around today, it could make you rich, depending on the condition, the $25 banknote could fetch between $5,000 and $43,000 on eBay.
