INFORMATION FOR EDMONTONIANS: ELDER ABUSE
We don't often talk about it but elder abuse is an issue in our community. We don't often hear about it because it is behind closed doors. Elder abuse is when someone harms or neglects an older person, and can come from a family member, caregiver, or someone else. If you suspect someone is being abused, look for these indicators: withdrawal, loss of interest in hobbies or talking about difficulties.
An estimated eight per cent of seniors experience abuse and many more incidents are not reported.
One of the biggest reasons that abuse is not reported is cultural isolation amongst immigrants. Other barriers include language, different cultural practices and lack of familiarity with the resources available. But the city is working to help those abused by collaborating with service providers, community partners, government and professionals.
Seniors are encouraged to reach out for help. Support can be reached at Seniors Protection Partnership, 780-477-2929. For information and referral in more than 170 languages, 24 hours a day, please call 211.
Individuals affected by elder abuse, or those concerned for the safety of a senior citizen, can also call the Seniors’ Abuse Helpline, 24 hours a day, at 780-454-8888.
All Albertans deserve to live without fear and feel safe in their homes, including our elders across the diverse communities.
