POPE FRANCIS ANNOUNCED ON SUNDAY, MAY 19, THAT HE WILL APPOINT 14 NEW CARDINALS NEXT MONTH
Pope Francis announced on May 19, that he will appoint 14 new cardinals next month, on June 29, including from Iraq, Pakistan, Madagascar and Japan. From Pakistan comes Joseph Coutts of Karachi. "Their origins reflect the universality of the church,” Pope Francis said in his address in Saint Peter's square. 11 of the 14 will also be under 80 years old. Pope Francis, the first head of the church from Latin America is 81 and was named Pope in 2013.
